Rotary vane pumps work by mechanically trapping a volume of gas and moving it through the pump, creating a low pressure on the inlet side. They are built in single-stage and two-stage versions — two-stage pumps reach lower ultimate pressures. Oil pumps tolerate water vapour well when the gas ballast is opened.
