The indicator measures the pressure drop across the element and shows when it needs replacing — a calendar interval is an approximation, the pressure drop is a fact.
A fouled element consumes pressure the compressor has already produced, so putting off the replacement costs more than the element itself.
Differential indicators give a numerical value; mechanical ones work with simple zone signalling.
